PROTESTORS ENCIRCLE THE PM'S MANSION IN SRI LANKA, AND THE GALLE FACE AGITATION ENTERS ITS 16TH DAY

Student protesters surrounded the Sri Lankan Prime Minister's Residence in Colombo, as the anti-government Galle Face protests entered their 16th day and calls for the President and Prime Minister to quit became louder.

Thousands of supporters of the Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) were observed shouting slogans outside the Prime Minister's Residence in Wijerama Mawatha. Dozens of people demonstrated from the official residence's parapet and perimeter walls, resembling a seizure.

The protesters requested the resignations of both President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa. The slogans ranged from gentle jabs to outright taunts. Some vandals scrawled "Go home, Rajapaksa!" on the border walls.

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets since April 9, when the government ran out of funds for critical imports; prices of key commodities have risen, and there are severe shortages of fuel, medicines, and electricity.

On Sunday, the protests appeared to acquire a more aggressive tone, a day after Prime Minister Mahinda rebuffed proposals for an interim government.
