FLIGHT PRICES ARE RISING, MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR EXPATRIATE KERALITE FAMILIES TO RETURN HOME

Abu Dhabi: Expatriate Keralites families could not go home due to increased air ticket prices. With three days to go before school closes in the UAE, rates have skyrocketed. There are no seats on direct flights, even at higher rates.

Although there are limited seats available on some flights, the one-way fare is around Rs 42608-63912 (Dh2000–3000). The four member  family will have to spend at least Rs 3.5 lakh to travel home on connection flights through other sectors.

Each airline charges a different rate. If the journey is via Abu Dhabi, the fare will be higher. The four member family needs Rs 2.5 lakh in Indigo to leave Dubai for Kochi on July 2 and return on August 28, just before the school reopens. There is no direct flight, departing via Ahmedabad and arriving via Mumbai.

GoFirst, which has just launched a service from Abu Dhabi to Kochi, charges Rs 3.39 lakh. There are only seats on the connection flight via Mumbai. This indicates that despite the launch of two new airlines, ticket prices have not dropped. The fare on Air India Express is Rs 3.35 lakh. To board the same flight and return to Air India, one has to pay Rs 3.37 lakh and in Indigo Rs 3.45 lakh.

Economy class tickets cost more than Rs 3.5 lakh on SpiceJet, Rs 3.7 lakh on Han Air and Rs 3.8 lakh on Air Arabia. The lowest fare on Emirates Airlines is Rs 4.7 lakh. If it is a business class ticket, it will more than double.

Only those who have booked months in advance will be able to travel at a cheaper rate. Many families have not been able to go home for the past two years due to the Covid crisis. Until July 14, the fare to Kerala will be almost the same.
