The oldest male panda in captivity in the world passed away on Thursday in a zoo at a theme park in Hong Kong.

The panda, known as An An, was put to death at the age of 35, which is the same as a human surviving until age 105.

The choice was made, according to Ocean Park officials, after he displayed "steady indicators of decline" over the previous three weeks.

The central government of China gave An An and Jia Jia, its mate, to Hong Kong in 1999.

The panda's food consumption gradually decreased, according to Ocean Park's officials, until it stopped consuming solid food altogether and was only consuming water and electrolyte drinks.

The panda's keepers also noticed that his activity levels had decreased and that his rest intervals were lengthening.
