The fire department has recommended residents in various districts of the Czech Republic to keep their windows closed while they battle a large forest fire.

Parts of the Bohemian Switzerland national park, which borders Germany, have been on fire since Sunday.

Strong winds have blown smoke over the country amid record temperatures and dry conditions.

Homes have been damaged, and the smell of smoke has reached Prague, which is 100 kilometres (60 miles) to the south.

Smoke has also been reported 180 kilometres to the south-east in the Pardubice area.

Hundreds of Czech firemen were dispatched as the fire ravaged the village of Mezna, destroying tracts of woodland and residences. The fire was also threatening Hrensko, a small village.
