Kuwait City: A basket of shrimp was sold for 15 dinars in the Sharq market auction yesterday afternoon, while the price of one kilo in the stalls ranged from 3 dinars to 9 dinars depending on size, following a spike in shrimp prices that reached 66 dinars for one basket at the beginning of the month.

"The mild conditions and the fishermen's return from their vacations to work have restored the spirit to the fish market," said Zaher Al-Suwayan, head of the Kuwaiti Federation of Fishermen, adding that 700 baskets of shrimp (each weighing 22 kilogrammes) were sold.

The Umm Nairiya basket cost between 50 and 55 dinars, whereas the Shahamiya type was sold for 15 dinars. He emphasised that "what is caught is in small quantities and does not enter the market," adding that "the price of a kilo of shrimp on the stalls in Sharq ranges from one to three dinars, depending on the size."
