Kuwait City: Dr. Wafaa Al-Hashash, Consultant in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology, stated that colon and rectal cancer cases have increased in Kuwait in recent years, indicating that "around 3,842 such cases were registered in the country in 2020 according to World Health Organization (WHO), while 1,719 mortalities and 10,885 cancer cases were recorded in the previous five years". On a global scale, WHO statistics show that cancer caused 10 million deaths, with a prediction that 28.4 million more cancer cases will be diagnosed by 2040.

This means that one in every five people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, with one in every eight men and one in every eleven women dying as a result of cancer complications. According to new estimates, more than 50 million people will survive five years after having a history of cancer, Al-Hashash added. When asked about the most common types of cancer, Al-Hashash revealed that one out of every four women has breast cancer, as well as colon, womb, lung, and thyroid cancers.

“Breast cancer constitutes 21 percent of cases in both genders, followed by colon and rectal cancers; while thyroid cases constitute seven percent. In Kuwait, 14 percent of colon and rectal cancer cases were recorded, followed by 13 percent of prostate cancer cases and seven percent lung cancer cases,” she concluded.
