ITALIAN FAR-RIGHT ATTEMPTS TO GAIN POWER AS ELECTION CAMPAIGN COMES TO AN END

The campaigns of Italy's political leaders have come to an end ahead of Sunday's crucial elections, which could result in the election of the most right-wing administration since the war.

Giuseppe Conte, a competitor, told supporters that the vote had historic significance. Giorgia Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy are predicted to win.

Arguments over Europe and Russia's war predominated at the campaign's conclusion.

However, rising energy prices are what voters are most concerned about.

Both businesses and homeowners are experiencing rising bills. In the beach town of Ostia, Audrey ran a small gelateria where she sold ice cream. She claimed that her energy costs had more than tripled to €6,000 (£5,350) per month. The outgoing national unity government under Mario Draghi has already pledged €66bn (£59bn) to help Italians.
