PROTEST OVER REDUCTION IN FISH SUBSIDIES

  • 08/11/2022

Kuwait City: Dhaher Al-Suwayan, the head of the Kuwaiti Union of Fishermen, has requested that the Minister of Finance grant the union's request to meet with him as soon as possible in order to discuss the hardships endured by the fishermen. He stated in a press release that they had asked for the meeting before the fiscal year 2022–2023 budget was approved, but the time has not yet been determined. Al-Suwayan praised the Minister of Finance for his efforts, noting that he agreed to raise feed subsidies but objected to raising fish subsidies, which had not been raised in more than 30 years.

He said that the fishermen are hoping that the Minister of Finance will agree to boost the 2022/2023 budget and increase fish subsidies, or transfer some subsidies between sectors in the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR), especially since subsidies have increased and doubled in all sectors except for fish subsidies, which have not increased since 1992 despite the approval of the Board of Directors of PAAAFR and the recommendation of the fisheries sector that it should be increased.

Sadly, the union has not yet found a representative who will do them justice despite their years-long calls for increased fish subsidies. Al-Suwayan continued by saying that fishermen require assistance from those who can find solutions to the industry's problems, particularly given that they incur significant operating expenses while out on fishing trips in addition to maintenance costs and the cost of purchasing fishing equipment at the start of each season. He emphasised the value of paying attention to and providing assistance to the fishing industry so that fishermen can continue to contribute to market-based food security, noting that the industry has endured years of neglect and marginalisation of its legitimate needs.
