Kuwait City: According to Internal Medicine and Nephrology Consultant and President of Kuwait Nephrology Association (KNA) Dr. Anas Al-Yousef, 40% of type II diabetes patients and 30% of type I diabetes patients are likely to develop chronic kidney disease. According to Dr. Al-Yousef, the disease is identified by the presence of protein in urine samples, which indicates a 60–70% reduction in kidney function.

On the occasion of  World Diabetes Day, Al-Yousef explained that diabetic patients should maintain low blood sugar levels and take their prescribed medications to prevent such complications. Al-Yousef added that by 2045, the number of patients is anticipated to increase to 783 million, citing data from the International Diabetes Federation that showed there were 537 million adult type II patients as of 2021. Al-Yousef also mentioned that drugs have been developed recently with the ability to lessen kidney problems, reduce urine protein, and prevent complete kidney failure, mentioning that such drugs are accessible in Kuwait's medical facilities.
