LETTERS APPROVES, MPs LIFT IMMUNITY

Kuwait City: The speech that His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah gave during the opening session of the legislature on behalf of HH the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was discussed by the National Assembly on Tuesday along with several incoming letters, a request to lift the parliamentary immunity of two MPs, and other matters. The request to remove MP Obaid Al-Wasmi's immunity so that he could be tried for taking part in primary elections was approved by the Assembly with 32 votes in favour and 19 votes against, but a similar request involving MP Hamed Al-Bazzali was denied with 31 votes against and 19 votes in favor.


The following letters were received and approved by the Assembly:

■ requesting the formation of a joint committee with representatives from major and entertainment businesses and the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee, with the task of submitting a report on the establishment of the North Economic Zone;

■ a request to the same chairman to appoint the committee to conduct research into the government's plans for island development and to refer to the panel the idea of exempting medical personnel from the requirement for a high-qualification certificate; 

■ request of the Values and Negative Phenomenon Committee chairman to assign the panel to carry out a study on weak family ties, drugs, bribery, cross-gender, cheating and use of influence (‘wasta’) and then submit its report to the Assembly; 

■ requests from a number of MPs that the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee submit its report on the Conflict of Interests Bill more quickly;

■ MP Muhammad Al-request Hewaila's that the Housing Welfare Committee investigate the land distribution for the South Qairawan residential project and submit its report before the current legislative year comes to an end, as well as continue to monitor infrastructure tenders for South Sabah Al-Ahmad City;

■ a request that the chairman of the Complaints and Petitions Committee refer petition number 167 to the Environment, Food, and Water Resources Committee because one of that body's responsibilities is to consider such petitions;
