Kuwait City, March 4: The World Bank stated that the earthquakes that struck Syria last month caused direct material damage estimated at $5.1 billion and exacerbated the devastation in a country already exhausted by years of civil war.

The current value of damaged or destroyed buildings and infrastructure is estimated at about 10 percent of Syria's gross domestic product. "The disaster will lead to a decline in economic activity, which will further affect the prospects for growth in Syria," said Jean-Christophe Carré, Regional Director of the Middle East Department at the World Bank.
