WHO: China records first human death from H3N8 bird flu

China: The World Health Organization said a Chinese woman became the first human death from a rare bird flu strain in humans, but the strain did not appear to have spread among the population.The organization said in a statement that the 56-year-old woman from Guangdong Province is the third known case of H3N8 influenza, a subtype of bird flu.The other two cases were also in China and were recorded last year.

The health organization said the woman suffered from several diseases and had frequent contact with live birds. The Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced the third case late last month, but gave no details about the woman's death.
