KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait’s total population has surpassed 5 million for the first time, reaching 5.098 million by mid-2025, according to new data from the Public Authority for Civil Information. Of this total, only 30% — about 1.55 million — are Kuwaiti citizens, while the remaining 70% (around 3.55 million) are expatriates.

The statistics reveal that the majority of residents are working-age adults, with 17% under 15 years old, 80% between 15 and 64, and just 3% over 65. The country’s population is also heavily male-dominated, with men making up 61% (3.09 million) and women accounting for 39% (2 million).

Indians are the largest expatriate group, numbering over 1 million and forming 29% of the total population, followed by Egyptians at 19% (around 661,000). Together, 10 nationalities make up the bulk of Kuwait’s domestic labor force — about 822,000 domestic workers are employed nationwide, 58% of whom are women.

Domestic workers make up 26% of the total workforce and 16% of the total population. Indians represent the largest share of this segment at 41.3%, followed by Filipinos (17.9%) and Sri Lankans (17.6%).

Regarding employment, 2.28 million people in Kuwait are working — about 45% of the population. Of these, 520,000 work in government jobs, while 1.76 million are employed in the private sector. Egyptians form the largest group of foreign workers in the government sector (7.2% of expats), while Indians lead the private sector with 31.2%.

The report also notes shifts in family and marital status. About 2.3 million people are married, while 1.7 million are single. The number of divorcees stands at 125,000, with Kuwaiti women accounting for double the number of divorces compared to resident women.

These figures underline Kuwait’s heavy dependence on foreign labor for both skilled and domestic work — highlighting how expat communities continue to shape the country’s demographic and economic landscape.
