Abu Dhabi is taking a major step in advancing the UAE’s space technology sector by constructing 20 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) — the first initiative of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region.
This project is led by Mira Aerospace, a subsidiary of Space42, which has set up the region’s first aerial platform facility spanning 4,500 square meters. The platform is designed to support various applications across civil, environmental, and defense sectors.
Khalid Al Marzooqi, CEO of Mira Aerospace, highlighted that the global demand for high-altitude platform technologies is growing rapidly. He noted that through strategic investments, Space42 aims to strengthen its leadership in this sector. The new facility aligns with the UAE’s 2030 National Space Policy, focusing on advancing space technology, manufacturing, and research capabilities.
Space42 is already known for demonstrating 5G connectivity from the stratosphere using heavier-than-air platforms — a first in the region. In February this year, the company signed an agreement with Maydan X to establish a permanent test center for high-altitude, long-endurance drone flight trials.
In October 2024, the company developed two innovative payloads to support applications such as environmental monitoring, disaster management, urban planning, and agriculture.
This milestone project underlines the UAE’s commitment to building cutting-edge aerospace solutions and supporting regional innovation in advanced unmanned systems.
