Manama: Bahrain is moving towards a nationwide ban on smoking in public places. Saleh Tarada, Chairman of the Capital Trustee Board, has submitted a proposal to ban smoking in all public parks, walkways, gardens, and coastal areas. The aim is to protect people from second-hand smoke and safeguard the health of both citizens and residents.
The proposal has been sent to Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam and Shura Council Chairman Ali Saleh Al Salehi, with a request to amend the law to officially cover all public spaces. Hassan Boukhammas, who leads parliament’s foreign affairs, defense, and national security committee, has fully backed the plan, which is expected to be formally discussed in parliament in October.
The move follows similar health-driven steps in the region. Recently, Saudi Arabia’s municipalities and Ministry of Housing proposed banning tobacco sales in kiosks, grocery stores, and central markets to further restrict tobacco use. Bahrain’s proposed smoking ban aligns with regional efforts to tighten tobacco regulations and protect public health.
