SAUDI ARABIA COMPLETES MERS VACCINE CLINICAL TRIAL

Riyadh: In collaboration with Oxford University, the King Abdullah International Medical Research Center at the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs recently completed phase one of the first Saudi clinical study to determine the safety and immunogenicity of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus vaccine.

The process began in 2015 with the development of a MERS vaccine through collaboration between the research centre team and Oxford University. The vaccine was tested in the lab and then on mice, which demonstrated the vaccine's immunity and effectiveness, before being transferred for testing in the Kingdom, where the virus has been endemic since its discovery in 2012.

In a nearly two-year study, the joint research team examined and tested the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of the vaccine to be used for immunising camels against the MERS virus. The findings were published in the international scientific journal The Lancet in November, concluding that the vaccine is safe and provides strong immunity.
