Jeddah: Saudi Arabia confirmed its first case of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant as countries tightened international travel restrictions in an attempt to slow its spread. According to a source from the health ministry, the infected individual – a Saudi national who has been isolated – had returned from a North African country.

The ministry confirmed that the first case was detected as a result of the efforts of the Ministry and the Public Health Authority to monitor and control the situation for the detection of omicron virus in the country.

The Ministry stressed the need for both nationals and foreigners in the country to receive corona vaccine doses, all precautionary measures, preventive measures and compliance with approved protocols, and the importance of following the quarantine guidelines for those traveling abroad.

Saudi Arabia has stepped up inspections at various airports and border checkpoints in the wake of the new virus being detected in various countries. Travel bans were also announced for foreigners directly from African countries where the disease was found.
