Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has launched an innovative initiative to use drones and helicopters for delivering essential medical supplies during the Hajj season. The move is aimed at drastically reducing delivery times and improving healthcare accessibility for millions of pilgrims.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Unified Procurement Company (NUPCO), is implementing this high-tech project—marking a global first in medical logistics during a mass pilgrimage.
Saudi Health Minister Fahad Al-Jalajel stated that the system is designed to ensure rapid response to medical emergencies in densely populated areas such as Arafat and Mina. “The goal is to provide pilgrims with a safe and healthy environment by using the most advanced technology available in global healthcare,” he said in a statement.
Drones have been deployed to deliver life-saving medicines and critical equipment directly from NUPCO distribution centers to six key healthcare facilities in Arafat and Mina. According to the ministry, this new method has reduced the delivery time from nearly one hour to just five minutes.
In addition to drones, helicopters are also being used to support medical centers by delivering time-sensitive supplies and transporting patients to hospitals when urgent treatment is needed.
With over a million pilgrims expected to gather at holy sites, this high-tech system is a major step in ensuring effective and timely healthcare during one of the world's largest annual religious gatherings.
