DNA TESTS WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY CHILDREN BORN OUTSIDE OF KUWAIT AS A RESULT OF MARRIAGES TO KUWAITIS

Kuwait City: The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior Affairs stated on Friday that common committees comprised of personnel from the General Department of Nationality, Travel Documents, and the Criminal Evidence division decide the Kuwaiti identity for persons born abroad using scientific means. The commissions carry out the responsibility of enforcing the law in order to maintain Kuwait's identity as well as for humanitarian reasons. According to a news release from the Interior Ministry, the committees are entrusted with investigating some births outside the state of Kuwait as a result of marriage to Kuwaiti residents.

These teams travel to locations where births purportedly from Kuwaiti parents (or parents) occur on a regular basis to collect samples of the babies' DNA for examination in Kuwait for certain verification. The DNA verification permits the newborn to enter Kuwait as a citizen, avoiding issues for the parents and children. The procedure followed by the committees in taking the DNA sample and comparing it with the Kuwaiti father precludes manipulation or exploitation, as well as recourse to the embassy to request a document or an entry visa.
