Kuwait City: June 19, 1961 has always been etched in the hearts and thoughts of Kuwaitis. It was the day Kuwait declared its independence and sovereignty as an Arab nation. The historic day marked the start of modern Kuwait. It was the day the Declaration of Independence was signed and the protectorate pact with the British Government was terminated, marking the beginning of prosperity and growth. Because of the evolution of the political and economic conditions in the State of Kuwait, the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah discovered that the protectorate treaty signed by Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah in 1899 was no longer legal. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem proclaimed the treaty's cancellation by signing the declaration of independence with Sir George Middleton, the British Government's Chief Political Resident in the Arabian Gulf.
