Abu Dhabi:The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has announced the launch of the Emirates Road Expansion Project, a major national infrastructure initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving the efficiency of the UAE’s federal road network.
Implemented in collaboration with local authorities, the project will widen Emirates Road from three to five lanes in each direction along a 25-kilometer stretch, starting from Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah to Umm Al Quwain.
Once complete, the expansion will boost road capacity by 65 percent, allowing it to handle up to 9,000 vehicles per hour, ensuring smoother journeys for commuters and facilitating the movement of goods across the country.
The development plan also includes a significant upgrade to Interchange No.7, where six new directional bridges with a total length of 12.6 kilometers will be constructed. These bridges will collectively handle about 13,200 vehicles per hour.
In addition, new collector roads spanning 3.4 kilometers on both sides will help regulate traffic flow and enhance road safety.
With an estimated cost of AED 750 million ($202.5 million), construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025 and is expected to take two years to complete. The improvements are projected to reduce travel times by up to 45 percent, greatly benefiting commuters travelling between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai.
