Abu Dhabi Police have introduced stringent new penalties for drivers who repeatedly commit traffic violations, focusing on a points-based system. The details were announced by Lt. Col. Saeed Khalfan Al Kaabi from the Traffic Points Program Department.
The key measures are as follows:
Drivers under 21: Accumulating 24 traffic points will result in a six-month license suspension. They can lift this suspension by paying a 2,400-dirham fine and completing a one-day rehabilitation course. However, if they reach 24 points a second time, their license will be permanently revoked, and they can only reapply after one year.
Permanent License Holders (over 21): Accumulating 24 points leads to a three-month suspension, which can also be lifted by paying a 2,400-dirham fine and attending the rehabilitation course. If they reach the point limit again within a year, the suspension increases to six months, with the fine and course still mandatory.
Authorities emphasized that serious violations carry high point values. Running a red light incurs 12 points, while endangering lives carries a severe 23-point penalty. These traffic points remain on a driver's record for one year and are cleared if the 24-point threshold is not reached within that period.
