Oman Issues Strict Customs Guidelines, Mandates Declaration of High-Value Items

Oman's Customs Authority has issued a new directive for all travelers arriving or departing via land, sea, and air borders. The guidelines mandate the declaration of certain items and warn against concealing currency or valuables.

Travelers must declare to a customs officer if they are carrying cash, precious metals, gold, diamonds, or other financial instruments equivalent to 6,000 Omani Rials or more. This declaration can be completed through the customs website.

The authority also provided a list of prohibited items, which includes all types of weapons, narcotics, explosives, and ivory. Furthermore, bringing certain regulated items—such as medicines, drones, live animals, and plants—requires prior approval from relevant government bodies.

The penalties for violating these rules are severe. Providing false information or failing to declare items can lead to imprisonment for up to three years and a fine of up to 10,000 Omani Rials. Travelers are also advised not to accept luggage from strangers and to report anyone carrying prohibited items.
