Muscat: Around 90% of Oman’s population considers it safe to walk alone at night, according to the latest Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) report released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
The report highlights significant progress in strengthening public security and reducing crime rates across the Sultanate. Homicide rates have dropped sharply, reaching just 0.14 per 100,000 people in 2023 — a 46% decrease compared to 2015. Strong laws and security measures are credited with lowering the overall number of crimes and ensuring the safety of both citizens and residents.
Incidents of physical assault fell to 2.3 per 100,000 people in 2020, and cases of sexual assault were also reported at the same rate. Oman has reinforced its commitment to child protection through new laws that ban any physical or mental abuse by caregivers or guardians. In 2015, only 0.003% of children under 18 experienced physical abuse.
The fight against human trafficking has also seen positive results, with the rate of trafficking victims recorded at just 0.2 per 100,000 people in 2023.
Oman’s achievements align with its dedication to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 16, which promotes peaceful, just, and inclusive societies. The SDGs — a global framework adopted in 2015 — aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030, covering areas from economic and environmental sustainability to social justice and human rights.
