RAIN HAMPERS RESCUE EFFORTS AFTER EARTHQUAKE IN AFGHANISTAN

A day after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, killing hundreds, rain hampers rescue efforts with many victims lying in the rubble.

"Not many bodies have been recovered. It was not clear at first whether the authorities believed there were survivors under the rubble," a resident of the hardest-hit Jayan district told.

The Taliban government has appealed for international support, as the survivors need urgent assistance including shelters, food, medicine and clothing.

"I have not experienced such panic since I was born, even though we have spent our lives under bombardment," a Taliban official involved in the rescue effort told.

On Wednesday, a local official had said that about 1,000 people were believed to have died and 1,500 others were injured in the quake, with most of the human loss occurring in Paktika province, the epicenter of the quake.
