BRITISH RAILWAY WORKERS CONTINUE THEIR STRIKE FOR SECOND DAY

Brtish railway workers continued their strike for a second day, Thursday after failed negotiations over wage increases in line with record inflation and fueling growing discontent.

About 40,000 members of the National Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers' Union (RMT) and 13 train operators are taking part in the strike.

Only 20% of the trains were running, and the lines were only open from 07:30 to 18:30. Several stations are closed and travelers postponed their flights.

"It is important to remember that these strikes are useless. I think people should sit around a table and solve the problem," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, on the sides of a visit to Rwanda where he is attending a Commonwealth summit.

He stressed the need for "logical reforms" to the railway system.

His government announced Thursday its intention to amend the law to allow temporary workers to replace strikers and to reduce the "disproportionate" impact of the strikes.

If approved by Parliament, the amendments are expected to enter into force in the coming weeks and be applied in England, Scotland and Wales.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the amendment was "essential" and "will ensure that any future strike causes fewer disruptions and will allow qualified, adaptable and flexible staff to work to continue.
