A man has died, and hundreds of people have been ordered to leave their houses in Sydney, Australia's largest city, due to severe rain and flash flooding.

Roads have been closed, with 18 evacuation orders issued in western Sydney alone, with more on the way.

"This is a life-threatening emergency," said Stephanie Cooke, the state of New South Wales' emergency services minister.

In March, the area was struck by flash flooding, which killed 20 people.

"We are now confronting threats on numerous fronts, including flash flooding, riverine flooding, and coastline erosion," Ms Cooke said at a press conference.
