HUMAN RIGHTS, WOMEN CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE VIOLENCE IN KUWAIT

Kuwait City: The Kuwait Society for Human Rights considered that “Kuwaiti women suffer from discrimination in a number of laws and regulations, such as the Penal Code (Article 153), the Nationality Law and the Residential Welfare Law, where women do not have the same housing rights as men, the Persons with Disabilities Law, the Civil Law, and the Personal Status Law. Concerning guardianship, guardianship, wills, and student affairs regulations in the Ministry of Education.


In its report submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Committee, the association stated that “by-elections obscure women’s meager chances of reaching parliament,” noting at the same time that “violence against women in Kuwait has not stopped and murders have occurred, killing women, in light of The absence of shelters for abused women and the lack of association of the articles and texts of the law with the executive plans and the follow-up of their implementation. 

Regarding the file of domestic workers, the association clarified in its report that “the number of workers in the domestic work sector reached 593,648 until the end of 2021,” noting that “89 percent of domestic workers do not receive an annual paid leave from their employers, despite the fact that Law 68 of 2015 regarding domestic workers has stipulated the eligibility of domestic workers to obtain them.

With regard to the Bidoon file, the assembly urged the UN committee to “request the Kuwaiti government to clarify the mechanism used by the central apparatus in accordance with the road map established by the Supreme Council for Planning and Development and approved by the Council of Ministers under Emiri Decree (1612/2010) in dealing With the Bidoon who are entitled to Kuwaiti citizenship and who have the 1965 census.
