ARGENTINA PNEUMONIA DEATHS MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY LEGIONNAIRE

  • 04/09/2022

Health officials in Argentina have suggested that Legionnaire's disease may have contributed to an infectious pneumonia outbreak that claimed the lives of four people.

Seven additional cases have been identified, the majority at a clinic in the Tucuman province in the north where the deaths took place.

A dirty air conditioning system or contaminated water are frequently blamed for the relatively uncommon lung disease.

This week, the World Health Organization was made aware of the infection cluster.

Doctors trying to determine the cause of the flu-like symptoms ruled out Covid-19, flu and the hantavirus - a severe respiratory disease carried by rodents - after testing the patients in the city of San Miguel de Tucuman.

The symptoms included high fevers, body aches and breathing difficulties.
