NIS PLANS TO EXPAND ITS CONTROL OVER CHARITABLE SPENDING OUTSIDE OF KUWAIT

Kuwait City: The National Integrity Society applauded the decision of Fahd Al- Shariaan, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Minister of Social Affairs and Community Development, to make financial statements of public benefit associations and charity organisations available on their websites, in accordance with the principles of disclosure, transparency, and governance rules. The association emphasised that disclosing financial assets is necessary to improve integrity and transparency, maintain voluntary and charitable work, and protect it from corruption risks.

The sources emphasised that "the more the work of public benefit associations expands, the higher their budgets and the greater the need for many measures to achieve accountability and enhance integrity and transparency," emphasising that disclosing their financial statements is a "globally recognised measure, and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries preceded us in implementing it."

Meanwhile, Integrity has called for the extension of control over the expenses of these associations outside Kuwait, as there are no specialized government agencies to control payments and disbursement on projects carried out by associations of public interest and charitable causes abroad such as the International Islamic Charitable Organization or Zakat House, with strict control measures in place, similar to the step taken by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to limit foreign aid through the King Salman Relief Center.
