KUWAIT RANK FIRST IN ARAB WORLD AND SECOND IN WORLD FOR GENE THERAPY FOR CHILDREN

Kuwait City: Kuwait ranks first in the Arab world and second globally behind the US in gene therapy for children with hereditary muscular dystrophy. This was informed by Laila Bastaki Head of the Center for Genetic Diseases in the Ministry of Health. Preparations are underway to include this disease in the program of newborn genetic survey. She said that currently 22 diseases are included.


13 children received new treatment in Kuwait. Since 2005, 900 cases of neuromuscular dystrophy have been diagnosed in the country. In 2018, the Genetic Disease Center in collaboration with the Fertility Unit of the Maternity Hospital delivered 265 healthy babies after starting the Pre-Implantation Embryo Screening Program, Dr. Laila Bastaki pointed out.
