TOKYO STARTS ISSUING MARRIAGE LICENSES TO SAME-SEX COUPLES

  • 01/11/2022

Tokyo has started implementing a partnership certificate programme for same-sex couples, which falls short of marriage equality but does allow them to be treated as married couples for some public services for the first time.

Some people believe that this could be the first step in Japan as a whole accepting equality.

It is currently the only developed nation in the G7 group to not recognise same-sex unions.

Recent polling, however, indicates that most Japanese are in favour of gay marriage.

NHK, the public broadcaster in Japan, conducted a survey in 2021, finding that 57% of respondents were in favour and 37% were opposed.
