Dubai Private Schools to End Friday Classes Early from January 9, Aligning with New Prayer Time

Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has announced a revised Friday schedule for all private schools and kindergartens in the emirate, effective January 9, 2026. Under the new directive, Friday classes will end at 11:30 AM, a change introduced in response to the nationwide adjustment of Jumu’ah (Friday congregational) prayer time from 1:15 PM to 12:45 PM, which takes effect on January 2. The move aims to accommodate students, staff, and families observing Friday prayers while ensuring instructional continuity.

Schools have been advised to carefully adjust their Friday curricula to avoid impacting academic progress. From Monday to Thursday, school hours will remain unchanged. For students in Grade 6 and above, schools may offer online Friday classes with parental consent, provided they obtain special approval from KHDA. This blended approach offers flexibility while adhering to the new operational timeline.

The adjustment follows extensive discussions between KHDA, school leaders, and educational stakeholders. An authority spokesperson emphasized that while implementing the new timetable, schools must ensure the curriculum is adapted thoughtfully so that learning outcomes are not compromised. Many schools across the UAE had already been considering schedule changes following the prayer-time revision announced earlier this month.

Authorities stated that the shift in Jumu’ah prayer timing was made after considering social and practical circumstances in the UAE. The updated school schedule reflects Dubai’s commitment to balancing religious observance, family needs, and educational requirements in a diverse community. Parents and schools are encouraged to plan ahead for the transition when the new Friday timetable takes effect in January 2026.
