The ongoing conflict in Syria’s coastal region has led to a death toll of 1,018, with 745 civilians among the casualties, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The clashes intensified following retaliatory attacks between government-affiliated paramilitary forces and fighters linked to the former Assad regime.
Government officials claim the attacks on security personnel were premeditated, with 125 government forces and 148 militants reportedly killed. The Observatory has warned that a lack of accountability may lead to further instability.
Latakia’s General Security Directorate head, Mustafa Kinivati, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting civilians and preventing further violence. He emphasized that retaliatory attacks would not be tolerated and that those responsible for security breaches would face consequences.
Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations have raised alarms over the worsening humanitarian situation. The ICRC called for the protection of civilians, access to healthcare, and safe passage for those fleeing violence. The UN highlighted damage to key infrastructure and urged for unrestricted humanitarian aid.
As security operations continue, authorities have urged remaining armed fighters to surrender, while humanitarian organizations stress the need for urgent intervention to prevent further suffering.
