Trump to Discuss Ukraine War Resolution with Putin on Tuesday

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to explore potential solutions for ending the war in Ukraine. His statement follows productive discussions between U.S. and Russian officials in Moscow over the weekend.

“I’ll be speaking with President Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work has already been done,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from Florida. “We want to see if we can bring this war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think there’s a good chance.”

Trump is seeking Putin’s backing for a 30-day ceasefire proposal, which Ukraine agreed to last week. Despite ongoing heavy airstrikes, Russia has made progress in pushing Ukrainian forces out of the Kursk region.

When asked about possible concessions in the ceasefire discussions, Trump stated that negotiations would involve issues related to territorial divisions and control over power plants. He noted that both Ukraine and Russia had already engaged in extensive discussions on these matters.

Trump spent the weekend in Florida before returning to Washington early Monday morning. His approach to the conflict has seen a shift in U.S. policy, with a seemingly more favorable stance toward Moscow. He previously described Ukraine as a challenging negotiating partner and had a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last month, which ended abruptly.

With Ukraine now agreeing to a ceasefire proposal, the pressure is on Russia to respond. This will serve as a test of Trump's diplomatic approach toward Putin, whose forces invaded Ukraine three years ago.
