Dubai: In a major crackdown, Dubai Customs has successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle one tonne of illegal drugs into the UAE. The smuggled substance, identified as Pregabalin, was found concealed in 40 barrels arriving via air cargo.

Authorities became suspicious during cargo inspection using Dubai Customs’ advanced detection systems. A thorough investigation confirmed the presence of illegal drugs. Following the seizure, legal procedures were initiated against the suspects, although their identities have not been disclosed.

Dr. Abdullah Mohammed Bousenad, Director-General of Dubai Customs, reiterated the department’s commitment to balancing smooth trade operations with stringent border protection to safeguard society from the threats of drug smuggling.

Pregabalin, a drug used to treat epilepsy, nerve pain, and anxiety, is a controlled substance in the UAE due to its potential for abuse. It is tightly regulated in many countries, including the UK, where restrictions have increased in response to rising drug-related fatalities.
