HURRICANE SHAHEEN APPROACHES COAST OF OMAN

Muscat: The low pressure area formed in the northeastern Arabian Sea intensifies and approaches the coast of Oman as a Category One hurricane. The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued. 


The Omani Meteorological Authority has confirmed that Hurricane Shaheen is currently 500 km off the coast of Oman. The Oman National Disaster Management Council has made all preparations to deal with Hurricane Shaheen. Hurricane Shaheen is expected to make landfall in the coastal areas from Muscat to northern Batinah governorates.

 The Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement that the cyclone would directly affect coastal areas from Muscat to North Bathina, including strong winds from Sunday morning. The governorates of North Batina, South Batina, Muscat, Al Dahira, Al Buraimi and Al Dakhiliya are likely to receive heavy rainfall of 200 to 600 mm. 

In addition, seasickness can cause flooding in low-lying areas. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has asked the public to be extra vigilant and not to go to sea to avoid any danger to the plaintiffs. Oman's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has called on fishermen, livestock and beekeepers to take precautionary measures. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has said that passengers in vehicles must cross the plaintiffs in accordance with safety instructions.

The committee also demanded that the public follow the latest and updated notifications from the Center of the National Disaster Management Council of Oman.
