Most adults in Hong Kong are required to use a COVID tracing app

HONG KONG: The Hong Kong government made its check-in app mandatory for most adults in bars and restaurants yesterday, marking the city's latest expansion of coronavirus tracing technology at a time of increased privacy concerns.

Because of mostly closed borders, some of the world's strictest quarantine rules, and ongoing social distancing rules, the international finance hub has kept infections at bay.

Although no local infections have been reported in months, the city is stepping up virus control efforts in order to align with China's zero-COVID strategy and achieve quarantine-free travel with the mainland.

Since yesterday, all adults under the age of 65 have been required to use the city government's COVID app, scanning QR codes to log their presence at 18 different types of establishments, including restaurants, cinemas, gyms, and karaoke bars.
