According to officials, at least 39 people were killed and 70 were injured when a crowded ferry caught fire in southern Bangladesh, the latest maritime tragedy to strike the impoverished low-lying nation.

The incident occurred early Friday near the southern rural town of Jhalokati, which is located 250 kilometres (155 miles) south of the capital, Dhaka.

The ship was carrying approximately 500 people.
Many passengers jumped from the ship into the frigid waters to escape the fire.

According to fire officer Kamal Uddin Bhuiyan, who led the rescue operation, it took two hours for 15 fire engines to control the fire and another eight hours to cool down the vessel.
Following that, the ferry's blackened hull sat anchored at the river's edge.
While divers continued to search the waters, many worried relatives gathered on the banks.
