AUSTRALIAN PM MORRISON CALLS GENERAL ELECTION ON MAY 21

Sydney: Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a general election for May 21, the closest possible date for a poll as his coalition's ratings remain low.

The prime minister has been unable to persuade voters that the policies of his government differ from those of Labor, the country's largest opposition party. Instead, the coalition has smeared Labor, accusing it of being "pro-China."

"This election is a choice about who can best manage our economy and who can best manage our finances and who can best take Australia through the crises that we have had and the crises that we will still face," Morrison said in a radio program in late March, stressing that Australia's economy has been stronger than other advanced countries as the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also told reporters on Monday: "How can you trust a Labor Party that when they were last in government [from 2007 to 2013], saw unemployment rise from 4.2% to 5.7%?" Labor were in power during the global financial crisis of 2007-2008.

According to the Australian Newspoll, Labor leads the ruling coalition 54-46 on a two-party preferred basis. Many Australians became dissatisfied with the stringent movement restrictions imposed after the coronavirus delta strain began to spread in June of last year. Morrison is attempting to sway voters by taking a firm stance on China.
