Kuwait City: To protect the military's reputation and ensure soldiers are not involved in any drug-related difficulties, the Ministry of Defense performed random drug tests on around 5,000 soldiers from various units and brigades in the army during the last two weeks, according to knowledgeable sources.

According to sources, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Talal Al- Khaled instructed concerned army officials to undertake surprise checks in the best interests of the soldiers' health and safety, and to guarantee that no narcotics or psychotropic substances were consumed.

According to sources, the tests are random and apply to all military personnel, regardless of rank or position. According to the sources, this practise is not new and has been in existence since the founding of the Kuwaiti army, but it is currently being executed on the minister's orders.
