MALAYSIA PASSES LEGISLATION TO LIMIT PARTY DEFECTIONS AMID POLITICAL UNREST

  • 28/07/2022

Following a series of defections that have caused political instability in recent years, Malaysia enacted a law on Thursday prohibiting elected MPs from switching political parties.

As national elections are projected to be scheduled earlier than the September 2023 timeframe, the new law could be critical in providing stability.
Malaysia has seen two coalition administrations fall since February 2020, owing in part to movements by legislators to switch party allegiances while retaining their parliamentary seats.

Under the new law, a lawmaker who decides to change parties after being elected to the post, would lose their position in parliament. The lower house of parliament passed the law by a two-thirds majority.
