A wildfire in California has grown to become the state's largest conflagration so far this year.

The McKinney Fire, which began on Friday in northern Siskiyou County, has already burned 21,000 hectares (52,500 acres), according to the state's fire department.

At least 2,000 residents, as well as hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail, have evacuated the region. An undetermined number of houses have been destroyed.

The fire department said that it was still 0 percent contained on Monday morning.

The McKinney Fire is raging in the Klamath National Forest near the Oregon border. According to the Los Angeles Times, 650 firefighters are battling the flames in harsh temperatures.  A red flag warning indicating the threat of dangerous fire conditions is in place, as California suffers from persistent drought conditions.
