FEAR GRIPS BANGLADESH AS PETROL PRICES SKYROCKET

  • 14/08/2022

Bangladesh, one of the world's fastest-growing economies, has increased fuel costs by more than 50% in a single week. It cites increased oil prices as a result of the Ukraine conflict. As another South Asian country faces a rising financial crisis, thousands of citizens have taken to the streets in protest.

As he waits in line for petrol for his truck, which he uses to deliver vegetables, Mohammad Nurul Islam expresses concern that he may soon have to resort to begging.

Petrol prices in Bangladesh have risen unexpectedly, from 86 taka (91 cents, 75p) per litre to 130 taka ($1.37, £1.13).

Diesel and kerosene prices have also jumped 42.5%.
