MOST MEAT ADVERTISEMENTS MAY BE BANNED IN DUTCH CITY OF HAARLEM FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

Due to the impact of the food on the environment, Haarlem, Netherlands, plans to outlaw the majority of meat advertisements in public places.

The ban will be in effect starting in 2024, thought to be a first for a city.

The meat industry and those who believe it stifles free speech have opposed the motion put forth by the green political party GroenLinks.

According to the UN, methane produced by livestock accounts for more than 14% of all greenhouse gases created by humans.

"Meat is very harmful to the environment. We cannot tell people that there is a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of it," Ziggy Klazes, a councillor from GroenLinks who drafted the motion, told the Trouw newspaper.

The government of the city of 160,000 says it has not yet been decided whether sustainably produced meat will be included in the ad ban.
