THREE SCIENTISTS RECEIVE NOBEL PRIZES FOR "LEGO" IN CHEMISTRY

Three scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on "click" chemistry, or the linking of molecules. Molecules are able to link together like Lego pieces thanks to the work of Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and Barry Sharpless. It is applied in the creation of cancer therapies that specifically target tumour cells.

Chemistry is now easier to perform and more efficient thanks to the work. The eighth woman to win the Chemistry Nobel Prize is Carolyn Bertozzi, a pioneer in the field of bioorthogonal chemistry that unites living cells.

"I'm absolutely stunned. I can hardly breathe," Professor Bertozzi said from the US when the Nobel Committee called her in the middle of the night.

Professor Barry Sharpless, also from the US, has now won the Nobel Prize twice. The first time was in 2001 for chiral catalysts.
