Kuwait City: Kuwait, after the United States of America, is first among Arab nations for gene therapy for childhood hereditary muscular dystrophy, according to Dr. Laila Bastaki, director of the Ministry of Health's Genetic Diseases Center. According to Bastaki, there are currently 22 cases of this disease, and plans are well under way to include it in the programme of genetic diseases for newborns soon. 900 cases of neuromuscular dystrophy have been diagnosed in Kuwait since 2005, she said, adding that 13 children have received the new treatment there.

Following the start of the pre-implantation embryo screening programme in 2018 by the Genetic Diseases Center in collaboration with the Fertility Unit at the Maternity Hospital, Dr. Bastaki revealed 265 healthy babies have been delivered to date. She cited the Eighth Kuwait International Conference on Genetic Diseases as an example of ongoing activities with significant participation from specialists, noting that the conference, which ended on Wednesday, featured a presentation of the most recent scientific findings in the fields of diagnosis and treatment.
