40% INCREASE IN EGG PRICES IN KUWAIT

Kuwait City: Due to the rise in feed prices, the spread of bird flu, and the monopoly of one particular egg-producing company, the price of eggs has increased by 25% in parallel markets, and it is anticipated that this price increase rate will soon reach 40%. The Consumer Protection Association demanded that the State intervene by setting up a local company to produce eggs in order to stabilise prices in response to an unjustified price increase. In the meantime, the Union of Cooperative Societies reiterated that it had declined egg-producing companies' requests to raise prices, emphasising that doing so was one way to defend consumers from the corporate greed of some businesses. In cooperative societies, it has been noted that the primary and auxiliary markets have little to no supply of eggs.

A source from the cooperative sector that the daily deliveries of eggs to cooperatives had been reduced by more than 60%. The lack of eggs in cooperative societies, which kept the price of the good constant, is evidence of this. In contrast, poultry companies increased their sales to unofficial markets, some of which increased the price of eggs by nearly 40%.

Mishaal Al-Manea, the head of the Consumer Protection Association, also revealed that they discovered that the price of eggs increased by 25% and is likely to reach 40% soon due to the rise in feed prices and concerns over the spread of bird flu, both of which contributed to decreased production and, as a result, a shortage of supply. He emphasised the illogic of these causes and the rate of price increases. Al-Manea noted that the nation has egg production businesses and that the Ministry of Commerce has prohibited the export of its goods, indicating that the local market must have a plentiful supply. He came to the conclusion that Kuwaiti businesses could become self-sufficient in terms of egg supply for the domestic market.
