A New York court sentenced an infamous Colombian paramilitary leader and drug lord to 35 years in prison. Don Mario, Daniel Rendón Herrera, was the leader of the right-wing paramilitary group United Self-Defense Forces (AUC).

The group, which was formed to combat left-wing guerrillas, was involved in kidnappings, murders, and extortion. Don Mario, 57, was apprehended in a rural hideout in 2009. He was Colombia's most wanted kingpin at the time. He was extradited to the US in 2018 and pleaded guilty last year to trafficking more than 80 tonnes of cocaine to the US.
