GIRAFFE KILLS A TODDLER IN A SOUTH AFRICAN GAME PARK

A toddler died after being trampled by a giraffe on a South African conservancy, while her mother is in critical condition in hospital. The 16-month-old girl lived with her mother at the opulent Kuleni Game Park in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Police stated that the details were sketchy, but that an inquest had been opened to determine what happened. Giraffes rarely attack humans, and they are a common sight in South African game lodges.

"The child was taken to the nearest doctor's room and died," said police Lieutenant Nqobile Madlala. The location of the incident on Wednesday in the large game park with 14 lodges is unknown. A manager at one of the luxury hotels declined to comment, citing "sensitive" circumstances.

The park is located 16 kilometres (10 miles) outside of Hluhluwe in KwaZulu-Natal, a popular tourist destination for both local and international visitors.

Visitors can "enjoy close encounters with animals while walking or cycling the numerous trails," according to the farm's website.
